Description
This is the original painting at 48" Wide x 36 Tall" x 1.5" Deep. Acrylic on Wood Panel.
2002 I paddled out at one of my usual surf spots. The sun was out, clear skies and clean water. Beautiful day. I got about half way to the line up (where you sit and wait for waves) and out of no where up comes a dorsal fin followed by a tail fin maybe 4 feet behind making this fish atleast 6 foot. He passed me then did a U turn and began swimming in figure 8's between myself and a younger surfer about 15 feet from me. We froze but after about a minute of waiting the kid beside me tried to padlle back to the beach where the shark took off after him, rammed the back of his board and threw him in the air. I could see his eyes, his stripes and new immediatley it was a tiger shark. The tiger got hung up on the surfboard, the boy and myself made it back to the beach and after 10 or 15 minutes of just smimming around the shorebreak the shark left. That kept me out of the water for weeks but the draw to surf was stronger than the fear of one of these.
I've painting lots of Sea Turtles, Sport Fish and various other sea life but stayed away from sharks because of this.
Finally, I broke the seal and gave painting one of these beautiful creatures a shot.
They are out there but 99.9999% of the time they are not interested in us.
